BHP TREATMENT. OPEN PROSTATECTOMY: IMPOTENCE

Impotence has been reported in as many as 10 percent of men after a TUR, but this is the most difficult to document of all the postsurgical complications. In some older men, impotence just develops spontaneously, whether or not they’ve had surgery. And there are so many variables to consider—self-consciousness; the presence or absence of a sexual partner; even a man’s perception of his sexual ability before and after surgery. For example, when some men who reported trouble with erections after surgery were studied, doctors found they could still have erections during their sleep—which suggests at least part of the problem could be psychological. It’s safe to say that if a man was having trouble achieving or maintaining an erection before the TUR, surgery probably hasn’t helped the situation. And that a man who was sexually active before surgery probably will continue to be.

Dry” Ejaculation may happen in as many as 75 percent of men after TUR. It has nothing to do with sexual performance, and does not change the pleasant sensation of orgasm.
