WHITLOWS (PARONYCHIA)

A whitlow is a painful, pus-producing infection of tissues around the nails of a finger or sometimes a toe. It appears quite unexpectedly and its discomfort impels you to take immediate steps to get rid of it. Soak the affected finger or toe in hot water (37-38 °C/98-100 °F) two or three times a day, for an hour each time, and be sure to keep the water warm. This treatment can effect a cure relatively quickly, but if not, ask a doctor to lance the finger in order to drain off the pus and prevent stiffening. It is also useful to know that not only hot water but also soft soap can be of help. Just spread the soap on the finger, bandage it and leave on overnight.
