MINDFUL EATING: THE KEY TO OVERCOMING BINGE-EATING DISORDER – COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Don’t be discouraged by the fact that there are many causes of binge eating. Even though most human behavior is complex, we can still understand and change it. The treatment program I will outline for you is a seven-step plan that attacks binge eating on many fronts. Treatment will focus on your compulsive overeating as well as the thoughts, feelings, and circumstances that trigger it.In recent years successful treatments for binge eating have been developed and studied in major universities and medical schools around the world. Dr. Christopher Fairburn of Oxford University in England, Dr. Stewart Agras of Stanford University, Dr. G. Terence Wilson of Rutgers University, as well as Dr. Marsha Marcus and Dr. Rena Wing at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have all been at the forefront of developing a successful treatment protocol for binge-eating disorder. This treatment, known as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, has been very effective in helping binge eaters improve markedly. These improvements in binge eating are well maintained over time. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy focuses on changing negative  thought  patterns  related  to  self-esteem, all-or-nothing (perfectionistic) attitudes about dieting, and body image. It also concentrates on changing eating behavior by establishing a normalized eating plan and breaking the binge-eating cycle.*61\358\8*
