The human cell is a marvel made by the Intelligence that has shown endless ingenuity in technical design, forever presenting scientific researchers with surprises.

The breakdown and conversion of nutrients produces wastes, in the same way as wastes are formed in the process of combustion or oxidation. We are talking about the so-called ‘metabolic waste products’. Exercise, breathing and rest are responsible for the elimination of wastes from the body, and if these processes are restricted, hindering their removal, then congestions and deposits occur that lead to rheumatism, gout and arthritis. Besides the nutrient reserves, the body has other reserves that can be so substantial that they influence the body weight. Active cells retain their elasticity, and work and exercise that requires plenty of movement maintain the health of individual cells, therefore benefiting the whole body.

MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS – CLIMATIC INFLUENCES

Today, many unnatural influences undermine our health and we often lack enough strength and energy to put up with the vicissitudes of the climate. To be exact, many of us are much more sensitive than were earlier generations. This should not surprise us if we look at our modern circumstances, yet it is more difficult to understand why the influence of climate can be so strange and inexplicable in its effect. Perhaps the laws governing climate and weather may still elude us despite scientific and meteorological progress.

On a visit to Sri Lanka I had the opportunity to make an extraordinary discovery in connection with the climate and its miraculous effect on us. The case in question concerned a nurse who had suffered from severe asthma attacks in her native Australia. The hot and humid climate of Colombo should, on all counts, have aggravated her condition but, instead, it had such a favourable influence that her asthma disappeared altogether. This change in her condition was in complete contrast to the usual experience with the disease, since dry, warm climates, particularly mountain and desert climates, generally have the best curative effect, or at least help to alleviate it. However, when this nurse visits her brother in the dry and cooler air in the higher altitude of the island, her health problem returns immediately. Once back on the hot and humid coastland, the trouble is as if blown away. For this reason the nurse has been living in the low-lying area for some years without as much as a twinge of her asthmatic problem.

MILK AND DAIRY FARMING – A RECOMMENDED PROTEIN FOOD

If we meet our requirement of protein with meat, including processed and cold meats, the body will respond by producing more metabolic wastes, but this will not happen if we concentrate on milk as a source of protein. Most people can take and assimilate milk protein quite easily, which is why milk products are excellent protein foods; for example, the soft white cheese known as ‘quark’ in German-speaking lands, or curds and cottage cheese in other areas, are excellent foods. Quark is ideal for making cheesecake, a tasty and wholesome sweet addition to our menu. Many Swiss families enjoy sweet quark, that is, quark mixed with almonds, berries or other fruits. Other healthy dishes are potatoes boiled in their skins, or jacket potatoes, and quark with horseradish. If you cannot obtain this type of soft cheese, cottage cheese or curds are equally good. They can be enriched with vegetable juices and are very popular for stuffing fresh tomatoes.

Another milk product is hard cheese, which satisfies the hunger of the labourer very well. From the point of view of health, however, soft white cheese is better. It is recommended that hard cheese be eaten together with salad and raw vegetables, so that it can be chewed and digested better, causing less disturbance to the stomach. They say that cheese is like gold if you eat it in the morning, like silver at noon, and like lead in the evening. In other words, you should watch what time of day you bite into a piece of hard cheese.

BERRIES – THE PROPERTIES OF SOUR BERRIES; BERRY JUICES

Anyone who avoids eating sour berries for fear of ingesting too much acid is mistaken, because not everything that tastes sour is also chemically sour. Even in very sour-tasting berries the alkaline substances predominate. The only berry with an excess of acid is the cranberry. All the others can help to neutralise excess acidity, even in the overacid bodies of people suffering from rheumatism and arthritis.

We have established that most berries are rich in vitamin C, so when they are in season they can supply us with what our bodies need, and that their alkaline minerals are also most beneficial. So as long as berries are there to be picked we should preferably eat them whole rather than only drinking the juice. We can do the latter once the season is over, enabling us to benefit from the curative properties of berries until the next crop. For those suffering from liver disorders bilberry juice is known to be excellent. Drinking blackberry and blackcurrant juice can be to our advantage. We know that the berries’ colouring substances share in their curative effect. For instance, they cleanse and regenerate the intestinal flora. So it is for our good if we do not let the berry season pass us by and during the rest of the year make good use of natural pure fruit juices for the sake of our health.

Eggs do, however, have the disadvantage of causing the formation of uric acid. This gives rise to the release of sulphuric acid, which can be noticed on the breath after one has eaten boiled eggs. For this reason, people with arthritis, rheumatism or cancer should abstain from eggs in all forms. Yet again this example goes to show that it is always necessary to consider whether any food can be eaten without detriment, or whether it should be avoided altogether. Fruit and vegetables, however, are always recommended, provided one’s digestive system tolerates them and the bowels do not react adversely, producing flatulence.

What has contributed to our having become much more sensitive than our forefathers were? Well, was not their life very different before the advent of fast-developing technology? And is it not true that two world wars have made our life more restless and less secure? Air pollution caused by various exhaust fumes is no basis for good health; neither is the threat of increasing radioactivity in the air, a relatively recent peril.

In spite of greater affluence in some parts of the world, we are burdened with greater anxieties than in the past. Although modern technology has made some heavy jobs easier and even takes care of them altogether, we seem to have less time than ever before. The paraffin lamp disappeared long ago; in those days its dim light did not allow anyone to work late into the night. Years ago people enjoyed the few hours after coming home from work, whereas today artificial light makes the day longer. Years ago people went to bed early and got up in the early morning to start a good day’s work with renewed strength. Today, however, work or pleasure continues late into the night, resulting in overtiredness. Our quota of sleep is cut short and is far from invigorating, and the next morning we wake up feeling in a bad mood, remaining so all day long. Is there any wonder that our liver will be affected by such a life-style? Constant hassle and worry, anxieties and fear, the mad rush of our daily lives are all bad for it. The old, traditional customs and habits needed to remain healthy have all gone.

POISONING OF THE STOMACH AND INTESTINES – CAUSES 2

The possibility of poisoning greatly occupied my mind when I myself fell victim to it and had to stay in bed as a result. One day I had been in search of certain herbs and while in the woods I crossed a clearing in which there were some wonderful specimens of deadly nightshade {Atropa belladonna). As the ground just there was very steep and slippery I involuntarily held on to the strong plants. Later, I came upon some poisonous prickly lettuce (Lactuca scariola), which I broke off and examined more closely. Shortly afterwards I found some wild strawberries under a luxurious growth of herbs and, forgetting I had not had the opportunity to wash my hands, I began to eat the delicious fruit. And then, to crown it all, on my way home I picked some poison ivy (Rhus toxicodendron) and held it in my hands. I remembered all these details later that night when I woke up with violent abdominal pains and tried to puzzle out their cause. On the whole I am not particularly sensitive to poisons, and I am sure that the poison ivy had little to do with my discomfort since it usually causes a rash in sensitive people, but I had no such symptoms. I had also eaten vegetables which we had bought from a store, since those in our own garden were late due to inclement weather and a late spring. This, too, could have contributed to the disturbance. Whatever the actual cause, the results were most disagreeable!

SPASMS AND CRAMPS – INTRODUCTION

There is a variety of fairly severe cramps that may be caused by a nerve or brain disease such as encephalitis, or may be brought on by an infection such as tetanus. Severe cramps may also be the result of urine poisoning, as in the case of uraemia and eclampsia. Each of these conditions requires specialised treatment. However, what we want to deal with here are the simple, frequently occurring muscle spasms. Sometimes these are experienced as twitching, or clonic, cramps, brief in duration but returning in quick succession; they can also be continuous cramps, known as tonic contractions.

These simple cramps can be successfully controlled by applying hay flower or camomile water packs on the affected area. Alternatively, a long hot shower can be taken, directing the spray onto the affected area. On hot summer days, if there is no hot water available, cold water will bring relief too.

GOITRE – CAUSES AND CURES

Although iodine deficiency always plays a part in causing goitre, other minerals and trace elements are essential for successful treatment. Experience has shown that calcium is as important as iodine, so for treating and preventing goitre I recommend a diet high in calcium. White cabbage salad and sauerkraut are rich in this mineral, as are kohlrabi (turnip cabbage) – especially the leaves -turnips, carrots and beets. The latter two can be taken as juice or included raw in salads. A good calcium preparation, for example Urticalcin, is an excellent supplement.

On the other hand, be very careful with commercial products containing iodine. In cases of unduly sensitive people, those who suffer from hyperthyroidism, the use of iodised salt alone will sometimes cause palpitations and upsets. A person who is sensitive to mere traces of iodine should avoid such products altogether.

A calcium therapy does not cause any complications, neither does the minute amount of iodine found in some plants. For example, watercress and all the other varieties of cress contain homoeopathic amounts of iodine which even the most sensitive person can tolerate. Seaweed prescribed in homoeopathic doses, such as Kelp 6x, Sx and 3x, is an excellent source of iodine. When a seaweed preparation is prescribed it is best to begin with Kelp 6x, then after a few months change to Kelp 5x and continue reducing the potency until, after about two years, the patient responds well to the tablets in uncontrolled strength. The herbal seasoning salt Herbamare contains freshly processed cresses in addition to all the trace elements found in kelp, and is therefore a useful prophylactic.

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE – WHAT RELIEF IS AVAILABLE?

Another good remedy for low blood pressure is hyssop, a plant that has been known and used since biblical times. Bible readers will recall God’s instruction to Moses in connection with the sacrifice of the lamb at Passover. At that time the Jews were commanded

to paint the door posts and lintels of their houses with the blood of a lamb, using bundles of hyssop to do so. Even today, the Samaritans use hyssop to prevent the curdling of blood of the sacrificial animal. There is a simple reason for this effect: the juice in the hyssop plant has the property of preventing blood from coagulating or clotting. In the 51st Psalm hyssop is mentioned in connection with spiritual cleansing. This singular plant does indeed possess a peculiar and mysterious power. It is most likely that its benefits in affecting blood pressure favourably and raising it are due to its influence on the gonads or sex glands.
