When breast cancer does recur outside the breast, it usually does so in rather specific areas. One of the most common locations is in the bone. Although the bones of the ribs, spine, pelvis, and upper arms and legs are most commonly involved, breast cancer can metastasize to virtually any skeletal area. This process may be heralded by local bone pain or ultimately bone fracture, but painless bone metastases are common as well. The spread of breast cancer to the lymph nodes is also quite prevalent. The lymph nodes adjacent to the breast and under the arm, called “axillary nodes,” are the most frequently affected areas. Breast cancer may also spread to the liver and lungs or throughout the skin and into the brain.IS TUMOR RECURRENCE OUTSIDE THE BREAST TREATABLE?Breast cancer that occurs outside the breast is treatable, but is generally much harder to cure than local recurrence. Physicians try to design treatments that will provide the patient with the best possible chance of curing the disease while avoiding additional risk in terms of life-threatening side effects. Therapy given to control tumor symptoms when there is little hope of cure is called palliative.*37\320\2*

Don’t be discouraged by the fact that there are many causes of binge eating. Even though most human behavior is complex, we can still understand and change it. The treatment program I will outline for you is a seven-step plan that attacks binge eating on many fronts. Treatment will focus on your compulsive overeating as well as the thoughts, feelings, and circumstances that trigger it.In recent years successful treatments for binge eating have been developed and studied in major universities and medical schools around the world. Dr. Christopher Fairburn of Oxford University in England, Dr. Stewart Agras of Stanford University, Dr. G. Terence Wilson of Rutgers University, as well as Dr. Marsha Marcus and Dr. Rena Wing at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have all been at the forefront of developing a successful treatment protocol for binge-eating disorder. This treatment, known as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, has been very effective in helping binge eaters improve markedly. These improvements in binge eating are well maintained over time. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy focuses on changing negative thought patterns related to self-esteem, all-or-nothing (perfectionistic) attitudes about dieting, and body image. It also concentrates on changing eating behavior by establishing a normalized eating plan and breaking the binge-eating cycle.*61\358\8*

Stress can undoubtedly act as a provocative factor in many patients and a logical form of treatment is to lessen this, if possible.Frustrating situations are met with in nearly all walks of life. One patient told his story as follows:From the standpoint of migraine, the year beginning 1 July was noteworthy because of the infrequency and mildness of attacks; during this period the amount of work in which I had been engaged just filled each day, making it possible to maintain certain personal ideals of perfection. Since November the greatest amount of concentration has been directed to quantitative determinations in a large number of microscopic sections of tissues. Frequent short periods of this rather monotonous work during almost every day had not been unpleasant. On 4 February it was suggested that an attempt be made to complete this research sufficiently to present an abstract of the work to a scientific society within 16 days for consideration as a presentation at a later date. Accepting this suggestion I therefore increased my concentration on this problem by working in the evenings. It soon became evident that the amount of work accomplished was falling far short of any schedule that would produce a sufficient number of figures within this time, and furthermore, the work was for the first time becoming distasteful. In the night, after the second evening in the laboratory I was awakened by an ache over the right eye associated with nausea. After a period of semi-wakefulness, sleep was resumed and the next day the only trace of a headache was pain on the right side of the head on coughing. After the third evening of laboratory work I was awakened at 4 a.m. by an ache over the left eye associated with nausea. Unlike the symptoms of the previous night they rapidly increased in severity until it became necessary to get in a hot bath to secure some relief. When I returned to bed, the pain and nausea resumed their former severity and 1 gram of codeine finally relieved their symptoms and allowed a few hours of sleep. During the entire next day there were nausea and a constant severe generalized headache extending downward into the back of the neck, which was made worse by walking, talking or reaching. The following morning the symptoms had vanished. This story will strike a chord with almost every migraine sufferer. Although it is possible to explain this sort of tension on a biochemical basis, too few studies have been done in chronic stress situations to pinpoint the problem but the existence of two different personality types is pertinent. Type ‘B’ people who thrive on challenges get a ‘charge or kick’ by being active and doing things and may in fact be depressed and lethargic when under-stimulated; with this personality, absence of stress may spark off headaches. The patient above is an example of a Type ‘A’ personality, who reacted badly to stress.

Parents are often bombarded with advice on how to care for their newborn baby, resulting in feelings of anxiety and inadequacy if the child suffers from even a minor skin abnormality. We tend to assume that our babies will be born with soft, unblemished skin, and while this is usually the case, it is not uncommon for a newborn to suffer from some kind of skin ailment.
Skin Care for BabiesAlthough newborn skin looks fragile, it is actually quite strong if undamaged, and provides very good protection, particularly against infection. The skin’s effectiveness as a natural barrier to disease, however, can be much decreased by the antiseptic solutions in which newborns are commonly bathed as these can cause dryness and cracking of the skin. Moisturizing bath oils and very mild soaps, such as Dove and Neutrogena, which tend to reinforce the protective layer, are best for newborn skins. Antiseptics should be reserved for open areas such as the umbilicus and circumcision sites.
Breast-feeding and the SkinBreast-feeding has gained enormous popularity in the last twenty years. Although there are some benefits associated with breast-feeding, there is no evidence to suggest that breastfeeding prevents any skin disorders.Initial studies suggested that breast-feeding protects children from allergies and eczema (inflammation of the skin). Recent studies, however, have shown that this is not the case and, in fact, that the opposite may be true. Breast-fed children are exposed to a number of different substances in mother’s milk to which they may subsequently develop allergies.Although the Nursing Mothers’ Association has successfully revived the art of breast-feeding, it should be kept in mind that infant milk formulas are today greatly improved, and mothers who are unable to breast-feed should not feel that they are disadvantaging their child, either physically or emotionally. Women who are unable or who chose not to breastfeed are not responsible for any skin disease or ‘allergy’ which their child develops. The supposed benefits of breast-feeding, among them a decrease in allergies, remain controversial.

Massage is one of the most ancient and universal of the healing arts. For thousands of years some form of massage or laying on of hands has been used to heal and relieve pain, although the value of massage is often underestimated in today’s ‘sophisticated’ world.Therapeutic massage is the art of restoring vitality, reducing muscular tension, and increasing health and well-being by manipulating the soft body tissues with the hands. By relaxing the body, massage can relieve both physical and mental tension, combating the overall effects of stress which are at the root of all illness. It can thus be beneficial for a wide variety of symptoms. Taut, painful muscles are loosened and relaxed. The circulation of blood and lymph is stimulated, resulting in the expulsion of toxins from the body, and the eventual restoration of balanced tone in the muscles and greater freedom in the joints. As muscles relax and circulation can function more efficiently, digestion and elimination, breathing and posture all improve as a result. As the body starts to change and heal with regular massage, feelings of depression, anxiety, fear or irritability – so often the side-effects of chronic patterns of tension – may eventually begin to lift. Thus, massage is beneficial not just for the body, but also for themental and emotional aspects of a person. As such it is an important holistic therapy, much more than just a ‘luxury’, as it is often seen,?” or a way of treating only sports injuries.*163\326\8*

You really should have professional help but if this is not possible eat as full a diet as possible with plenty of potatoes, whole grains, protein, olive oil and oily fish such as sardines and tuna. Remember if you are relying on sugary foods to maintain your weight you are not only eating empty calories – calories without nutritional benefits – but you are also feeding the Candida. The B vitamins can stimulate the appetite but take care with vitamin C. You certainly need plenty but it may have to come from food sources, as vitamin C supplements often reduce the appetite. How Others Have CopedJonathan was healthy as a young child but became ‘run down’ when he was 7 after the death of his grandfather. For three years he had regular ear and throat infections for which he was prescribed antibiotics. He never felt really well and often complained of tummy aches and diarrhoea. He had more antibiotics when he was 16. This time it was for acne; he took them for two years. He had never really lost his digestive problems and they began to get worse. His family had always teased him about his ‘sweet tooth’ but by the time he was 21 he realized how much he craved sweet foods, bread and cheese. He often felt thick-headed or depressed and noticed this was much worse after drinking beer, even half a pint. When his penis became sore and swollen he was again prescribed antibiotics. This treatment was without effect and was followed by a week on anti-fungal drugs. These helped but the infection recurred when they were stopped. By this time he felt very depressed; walking was so painful he could not get to college. Antibiotics and antifungal drugs were tried together and this helped but the infection returned each time the drugs were discontinued.Jonathan had seen his mother’s arthritis improve dramatically when she changed her diet so he decided to see her counsellor. He took the raw garlic suggested and had a half-hearted attempt at the anti-Candida diet. His penis was not so sore but he still felt low and it was not until he kept to a strict diet, took nutritional supplements and acidophilus that he really began to improve. He also started to exercise and spend more time outdoors. Within a month the diarrhoea that had been a problem since childhood had gone, he felt much more energetic and his skin was clearer than it had been for years.*76\326\8*

Heart disease and diseases of blood vessels are among the biggest killers in the western world. If ways could be found to reduce the risk of getting them, and to treat them, then countless lives could be saved.Despite a certain amount of controversy over the underlying risk factors which contribute to coronary deaths, a number are broadly accepted:• High cholesterol levels in the blood• Platelets that stick together unduly (platelet aggregation)• High blood pressure• Atheroma clogging up blood vessels• Vascular spasmDeaths from cardiovascular disease are high in those countries where a lot of saturated fat is eaten. Studies suggest that diets rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) do give some protection against these diseases. The death rate in the USA from cardiovascular diseases has fallen by a remarkable 20-25% in the last decade or so, since the population was persuaded to eat less saturated fat and switch to a high PUFA diet. In countries where this advice has not been followed, such as the UK and in particular Scotland, the death rate from cardiovascular disease remains high.

Case No.2 : Mrs. Tehl Singh was the Principal of a Public School of repute. She was, in fact, the architect of the School’s reputation as the premier institution in the matter of discipline. No teacher or student dared come late or leave early. No gossipping around the school premises, no idle talk, no unbecoming act by the students or other employees of the school. She brought up her children under the most strict discipline. The children felt mother’s fear nearer than mother’s love. When Mrs. Singh reached her middle age, she felt stiffening and pain in all joints, frequent bouts of migraine; constipation & many other troubles. She did not have many friends. Her own children left her home after getting married. After the death of her husband, she felt terribly isolated and alone. She had not sympathised with anyone during her hey-day. No body came near her in her difficulty. She was tense – so tense that she could not tolerate even an innocent remark from others. She was intolerant of people, of light, of change of weather, of noise, of disorderly behaviour of even unknown persons. Something was on her nerves all the time. When she came to us, she was much depressed. A new fear assailed her. What would happen if the stiffening of her joints ended in complete immobility of her limbs, now that she was alone & with no friends. A combination of Mimulus (for fear) and Beech (for intolerance) was given T.D.S for 4 weeks, after which she had no fear of the future and there was much relief in her tension. Mimulus was discontinued. However Beech Remedy alone was continued for another month till the negative side of Beech was replaced by the positive side of the remedy. Mrs. Singh became humane in her dealings. She developed tolerance and maturity of outlook. Now she did not look for faults in other people, rather tried to understand the cause and background of the other man’s failing. She not only sympathised with them, but helped them with her guidance, and instead of criticising them found cause to appreciate them. This welcome change in her temperament was noticed by others. She had no dearth of friends now. Her children came to her and faced her not in awe but with love. She had already shed off all her tensions and physical ailments.*60\308\8*

You might like them as an occasional treat, but otherwise you’re going to find no place here for so-called energy bars or nutrient shakes that contain way more sugar and fat than calcium or plant chemicals with beneficial hormonal properties. Some new products are more useful than others (like, say, calcium-fortified orange juice or soy milk), but mocha-chip-swirl-whatever is birthday cake, not a serious effort at guaranteeing long-term health and longevity. The explosion of products may be inevitable in our consumer economy, and it is beneficial in one important way: all the hoopla is putting a crucial health issue that’s been overlooked for far too long into the mainstream.Amid the hubbub, there are also some real advances emerging in bone health. We’ll look at the cutting-edge science that explodes some myths and illuminates new truths about bones and how to keep them healthy, whether it’s natural hormone supplements without the possible increase in cancer risk, or the latest research on increasing bone density through a simple set of exercises, or the latest pharmacological drug now available for the first time. But as wonderful as the rapid changes in our understanding are, they are just an adjunct to the most essential information in this book: the basics of food, exercise, nutritional supplements, and hormones that can give you a lifestyle that prevents the possible devastation of low bone density or restores you to bone health even if you’ve already experienced loss.*5\228\2*

Unfortunately, you probably didn’t hear-or remember or understand-all of what was said to you. What you did remember is your doctor’s statement: “You have diabetes.” These words, no doubt stuck in your memory. You responded to this announcement, most probably, with one of three reactions:”Why me?”"I don’t believe it.”"Poor me.”Any one of these responses is perfectly normal. Even a combination of these responses could be considered a normal reaction by anyone who has just been told he or she has a chronic disease.Your responses to the diagnosis of diabetes are not the problem. The real problem is your need to get satisfactory answers to your questions and to find solutions to the puzzles diabetes has set before you.*1/210/5*
